Varietal Composition: Xynisteri – Mavro
Alcohol Content: 45%
Description:
Zivania, a traditional Cypriot spirit, derives its name from the Cypriot word “zivana,” which means grape pomace. The first reference to Zivania is found in Homer’s “Odyssey,” where it is mentioned as “zivanon,” a drink consumed by the Cyclopes on the island of the Laestrygonians, leading to the destruction of Odysseus’ ships due to intoxication. According to EU regulations, no other spirit produced outside Cyprus can bear the name Zivania.
This rare aged spirit is distilled from the pomace of indigenous Xynisteri and Mavro grape varieties. Its maturation is a slow and meticulous process, aging in selected French oak barrels.
The history of winemaking in Omodos goes back a long way
The history and tradition of Cypriot viticulture and winemaking are inextricably linked with the course of Omodos through time.
Framed by the high mountain peaks of Troodos and with a sleepless guard the top of Olympus, Omodos projects proudly through its green vineyards.
Picturesque and welcoming, the traditional wine village of Limassol is one of the main tourist destinations of the Cypriot countryside.
The Gi-Ktima Vassiliadis Winery was created in 2017 by the lawyer and wine producer Christodoulos G. Vassiliadis.
It is a new beginning in the field of viticulture and wine production, which nevertheless carries with it centuries of wine tradition.
Christodoulos G. Vassiliadis was born and raised in Omodos, Limassol district.
He followed legal studies at the Law School of Athens and upon his return to Cyprus he proceeded to establish the law firm “Christodoulos G. Vassiliadis & SIA DEPE”.
Despite this, he never forgot his great love and passion, both for the village and his place of origin, as well as for viticulture and wine,
a love bequeathed to him by his father Georgios Vassiliadis as a viticulturist and wine producer.
A natural child of Omodos, he took over from his father, who, like all Omodites, has always made a living from viticulture and wine production and,
as a tenth-generation winemaker, proceeded to revive the family tradition.
With a creative eye he penetrated the magical area of winemaking, ready to contribute to the wine future of the region.
The exclusive aim of the winery is to produce fine wines for the demanding domestic and international public, highlighting Cypriot wine and at the same time
making the winery a living cultural lung for the surrounding area and the whole of Cyprus.
Today, on the calm, vine-covered hillsides of the area, at an altitude of 800 m to the summit of Laona and Afami at 1,060 m,
the winery Oino Gi-Ktima Vassiliadis keeps alive the tradition of the Mediterranean vineyard.
The rich wine tradition and architecture of the region is an undeniable witness of ideal viticultural conditions over time.
The linear structures that facilitate the cultivation methods, the dry stones from the traditional stone of Omodos that prevent soil erosion,
as well as the aromatic rose bushes that contribute to the prevention of the enemies of the vine, describe and define the vineyards of the Estate
A relationship that spans centuries. There, where the mountainous nature submits to the friendly inhabitants of Omodos,
until the fertile lands are transformed into a welcoming and fruitful land.
